Markets Introduction

SWAFFHAM MARKET

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Henry II granted two charters to Swaffham in the 12th century. A third charter was granted in 1215 that allowed Swaffham to hold a market and 3 fairs a year. At the fairs cattle and livestock were sold, these were held on the 12th May, 21st July and the 3rd November. People visited Swaffham from far and wide to purchase the wares of the market trader.

THE MARKET TODAY

Today the weekly market continues with around 50 stalls that are situated around the market place. People visit the market from all around the neighbouring towns and villages. You can buy fresh meat, fruit and vegetables, fish, cheese, household items, plants, flowers, clothes, tools, furniture, books, bric-a-brac, refreshments and much, much more.

CHRISTMAS TREAT

In the year 2006/07 the then Mayor Shirley Matthews and Deputy Mayor Anne Greaves established a tradition of supplying the market traders with a glass of port and mince pie on the last Saturday before Christmas. This is a thank you for continued support of our market.
